Seconds Eco Store
Seconds™ Eco Store was founded in 2008 in Taos, New Mexico by entrepreneur and mixed media artist Sara Basehart. For its first two years it was a home business in a sustainable, off grid, solar powered house built using recycled materials at the Greater World Earthship Community . Living in an earthship was the inspiration for opening a gallery boutique in the downtown historic district of Taos. A showroom that combines recycled design with solar powered gadgets and locally handmade crafts. After 5 years in business, Basehart turned to working with and launching programs that support emerging artists throughout the Taos community. In 2014, she joined the creative team of the Glam Trash Fashion Show, an annual runway of recycled wearable art that began in 2001. In 2017 she launched Taos First Friday, a monthly outdoor artists’ market intended to create a venue for emerging local artists to explore their art as business. Every year at the same time as the annual event the PASEO Project, she and her art partner Sarah Parker of Sara.h² strive to create an immersive art experience throughout the gardens of the John Dunn House Shops with the current year’s Glam Trash Fashion Show creations on display, and recycled art projects done by the duo that encourage public interaction. In 2019 they created a 9 foot tall marionette La Katrina named Ladybug who could be controlled by up to 4 people at once. In 2023 Sara Basehart was recognized as a Visionary Artist of Taos by The Taos Fall Arts Festival.
Seconds has seen an unfurling of adventurous recycled redesign and an evolution of new ideas birthed from the waste stream. With no end in sight to the problem of garbage, there is endless material with which to explore recycled creativity. It is Seconds’ goal to bring the fun back into being green. Recycled design can be breathtakingly beautiful, it can be whimsical, poignant, and practical. It is always inspirational to see what can be done with discarded materials and a little creativity. So, as we like to say, “Change your world, in Seconds.”
